However, it was not all sunshine and victory for Arsenal and their English midfielder, Jack Wilshere , suffering a hairline fracture to his ankle after going into a hard tackle with Danish captain and Liverpool defender Daniel Agger.
Speaking to the media on Thursday Wilshere commented as quoted by the Telegraph on how he noticed the injury after having played through the initial pain during the match on Wednesday:
“When I was going for that tackle I thought ‘I’m going to get this’ and then about a step before, I thought ‘No I’m not.
But I’m not going to pull out of a tackle. If I had pulled out I would have got hurt even more. But that’s football. Agger is a committed player, he has shown that for Liverpool, and I’m a committed player as well. It was one of those. We were both going to go for it, and, unfortunately, I was the one who came out a little bit worse.
It was painful, but I got through to half-time. I sat down at half-time and it stiffened up a bit. Probably the worst thing I did then was not move it around enough.”
Wilshere now will have to battle back to fitness to try and be ready for a chance to regain a place in Hodgson's side, but more importantly for the current moment he will be yet another injury blow to Arsenal.
The Gunners are struggling to maintain their title challenge and another midfielder now gone for a minimum of six weeks is the last thing that Arsene Wenger needed.
