Diego Maradona ’s second string Al Wasl were thrashed 6-2 by Dubai rivals Al Ahli last night at the Maktoum Stadium, lending credence to the Argentine legend’s demand to add depth to his squad if the club hope to be competitive next season.
In a bid to keep his men fresh for the second leg of their Gulf Champions League semi-final with Al Khor in Doha in two days’ time, Maradona fielded an all-Emirati side in the contest, giving his regulars a rest.
The former Argentina manager has reiterated that his squad lacks depth and with Mariano Donda, Juan Mercier, Juan Manuel Olivera, Waheed Ismail, Ahmed Darwish, Mohammed Reza Khalatbari and Rashed Essa all missing in action, Maradona’s point was clear.
Wasl took the lead through Sultan Rashed in the fifth minute, but Ahli wantaway Luis Jimenez’s hat-trick, his second this season, and a goal each from Yousif Mohamed, Grafite and Ismail Al Hammadi sealed a comprehensive win for Quique Sanchez-Flores’ side.
And Maradona said: “We’ve been experimenting in the last couple of games to see who will go and who will stay.
“I don’t have much to say about this season, but maybe we didn’t have the required reinforcements. I’ve spoken with the management and they know what is required.
"We need to fix this squad because we don’t want a repeat of this next season as it won’t reflect well on anyone - not me, not the players nor the president.”
Meanwhile, Ahli coach Quique, who is yet to agree to an extension, said: “Regarding the contract, I need to speak with my agent and then take a decision.
"In this season we worked very hard and made it nine straight wins, but I want to speak with Ahli about what they need and what the plans are for next season. Then we can decide.”
