The demonstrations were led by a breakaway faction of the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE) union, which has intensified its campaign against the federal government. Protesters have adopted the slogan “If there is no solution, the ball won’t roll,” using the global visibility of the tournament to press their demands. The group is calling for a 100 percent increase in base salaries to offset inflation, along with a comprehensive reform of Mexico’s public pension system.

The unrest presents an early political and security challenge for President Claudia Sheinbaum, whose administration has deployed riot police to key transit routes while attempting to avoid a forceful response ahead of the high-profile international event.

Speaking at a press conference, Sheinbaum said, “There is a lot of provocation. They are provoking us and want us to act and crush the protests,” reflecting the government’s concern over both maintaining order and avoiding escalation.

Tensions in the capital have escalated over the past week as protests have spread beyond road blockades. Demonstrators have previously used metal street fixtures to breach the Secretariat of Public Education building, while large promotional football installations along Paseo de la Reforma were toppled and set on fire.

Clashes have also taken place near the Zócalo plaza, where preparations are underway for the official World Cup fan zone, prompting authorities to deploy tear gas and crowd-control measures to prevent occupation of central public spaces.

Union representatives say at least five protesters have been injured in earlier confrontations with police, including one educator who reportedly lost an eye, though no deaths have been reported. The disruption has caused significant traffic congestion across the city, including routes leading to the Azteca Stadium and Benito Juárez International Airport.

Despite the unrest, World Cup organizers maintain that security perimeters around the stadium remain intact and that preparations for the opening match are continuing as planned. 

A source told US magazine People that the couple separated "quietly and amicably" several months ago. They took their time and carefully considered their options before deciding to part ways," the person told the publication. "They are still friends and very supportive of one another."

The actors met while co-starring in the current film rendition of the Broadway musical Wicked. BBC News has contacted Grande and Slater's reps for comment.

The singer and actress, both 32, first met Slater, 34, in 2023 while filming a Wizard of Oz spin-off in the United Kingdom.

Grande played Glinda the Good Witch in both films, while Slater played Boq Woodsman, who subsequently transforms into the Tin Man.

The live gigs follow Grande's Eternal Sunshine album, which was released three years ago, and come ahead of her upcoming album Petal, which will be released next month and is preceded by a new single, Hate That I Made You Love Me.

The pop artist, who is also renowned for singles like Twilight Zone and Side to Side, has shifted her focus to acting recently and announced in November that the tour would be her last for a "long time."

She was nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actress for her part in the original Wicked film.

Fellow actor and singer Slater, along with the entire Wicked cast, was nominated for outstanding performance by a cast in the same film at the Actor Awards, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.

He was also nominated for a Tony Award for his Broadway debut in SpongeBob SquarePants.

Lebanese sources and local media reported renewed strikes in and around the coastal city of Tyre (Sour), as well as in the towns of Kufra, Sajd, and Jabshit. The attacks were also reported along rural roads and village outskirts, with accounts of damage to civilian property and infrastructure.

At least two paramedics were reportedly injured in the latest wave of strikes, adding to a growing number of medical personnel caught in or near strike zones in recent months. 

Lebanese health authorities say repeated incidents have affected ambulances and first responders, including a June 6 strike in Ansariyeh that wounded emergency personnel assessing earlier damage sites. Other attacks in May and early June reportedly killed and injured multiple paramedics in southern villages.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry and state media have accused Israel of repeatedly striking civilian areas and emergency services, including through successive or “double-tap” style attacks. Israeli officials say operations are directed at Hezbollah infrastructure and fighters, and deny intentionally targeting medical teams, while accusing Hezbollah of operating within civilian areas.

According to Lebanese authorities and humanitarian groups, more than 100 medical workers and first responders have been killed since the escalation of cross-border hostilities intensified.

The current round of violence stems from fighting that escalated in early 2026 amid wider regional tensions involving Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah. Israel has conducted ongoing airstrikes and limited ground operations in southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah has continued rocket fire and cross-border attacks.

The exchanges have left significant damage across southern Lebanon, including destroyed homes, damaged roads, and widespread displacement of civilians, particularly south of the Litani River.

Both sides continue to accuse each other of violating ceasefire terms, while residents in affected areas remain unable to safely return to their homes.
A series of U.S.-brokered ceasefire arrangements introduced since April 2026 under President Donald Trump were intended to de-escalate the conflict and create conditions for a broader political settlement.

The initial agreement, announced on April 16, called for a temporary halt in hostilities, followed by subsequent extensions in late April and May. Additional understandings reached in early June outlined steps including Hezbollah’s withdrawal from areas south of the Litani River, expanded deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces, and restrictions on Israeli strikes outside defined security parameters.

However, implementation has remained inconsistent. Hezbollah has rejected key provisions, insisting on a full Israeli withdrawal and a comprehensive ceasefire. Israel, meanwhile, maintains that it retains the right to act against perceived security threats.

Despite diplomatic efforts and continued mediation by Washington, enforcement of the agreements has remained weak, with both sides reporting ongoing violations.

Speaking to reporters at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York following an NBA Finals game, Trump said the crew survived the incident and that a full military assessment would be released shortly.

“The pilots are fine. Yeah. Nobody injured. We are going to issue a report tomorrow. But the pilots are fine,” Trump said, adding that the aircraft had been downed in what he described as an Iranian attack.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the cause of the Apache helicopter's going down during a routine patrol mission in the early hours of Tuesday near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, off the coast of Oman.

 Both crew members were rescued within approximately two hours in an operation involving a U.S. Navy unmanned surface vessel.f the incident remains under investigation, with officials still assessing whether the aircraft was struck by hostile fire or brought down by other factors.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint, has been at the center of heightened tensions involving the United States and Iran amid broader regional instability linked to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

While Trump attributed the downing to Iran and said the United States would respond, military officials have not yet released independent confirmation or operational details supporting the claim.

No immediate U.S. military action has been announced. Officials say the focus remains on determining the exact cause of the incident as the CENTCOM investigation continues.
 

The unrest, which has intensified over the past week, has drawn national attention and deepened tensions between local communities, the Kenyan government, and U.S. authorities.

The first fatalities occurred on June 1, when hundreds of residents marched through Nanyuki and attempted to block key transport routes leading to the military installation. Security forces responded with tear gas, water cannons, and live ammunition, leaving two protesters dead from gunshot wounds and injuring several others.

Violence erupted again on Tuesday during renewed demonstrations. Witnesses and protest organizers said police used force to disperse protesters, resulting in the death of a third demonstrator who reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the head. At least ten people were arrested.

Demonstrators carried Kenyan flags and white crosses bearing anti-facility slogans, accusing authorities of disregarding public concerns over the project. Local residents and business owners argue that linking the popular tourism hub to an Ebola-related facility could damage the regional economy and deter visitors.

The protests have unfolded amid an ongoing legal dispute over the project. Kenya's High Court has issued emergency orders temporarily halting the construction and operation of the facility while demanding public disclosure of agreements between Nairobi and Washington related to the project.

Critics accuse the government of failing to comply fully with the court's directives, while supporters argue the facility is necessary to strengthen regional public-health preparedness. President William Ruto has defended the project as part of a broader health-security partnership with the United States. Opponents, however, contend that Kenya is being unfairly asked to shoulder risks associated with managing potential Ebola exposures linked to U.S. personnel and operations in the region.

The proposed 50-bed facility is intended to isolate individuals exposed to Ebola, including cases linked to outbreaks in parts of Central and East Africa. Construction has become a flashpoint in a wider debate over national sovereignty, public health policy, and foreign influence. 

As protests continue, demonstrators have broadened their demands, with some calling for political accountability from the government. Meanwhile, security has been tightened around the air base and surrounding areas amid concerns that the unrest could spread beyond Nanyuki.

Protestors in the thousands gathered in the streets of the capital Tirana and the southern coast where the resort will be built; raising concern for its impact on a protected wetland home to flamingoes, seals and sea turtle nesting sites.

The protesters are calling for the project to be scrapped completely. Using the flamingoes as their symbols; the protesters march carrying inflatable pink birds and chanting “Flamingo Revolution”. Edi Rama is however unmoved by the Flamingo Revolution as he declared that he is moving ahead with the project, telling ​Reuters that the project will "stun" onlookers with their plans in the coming months and that parts of the resort could be open to the ​public before the end of the decade.

“I'm telling you, it's going to be a beautiful project and we're going to ⁠do it and we're going to be proud to contribute to Europe,” Rama said a few metres from where nightly ​demonstrations against the project have taken place. “I was voted in to make these things happen. I'm not voted to be led by people that have a different ​idea of how to develop the country.”

The protesters are marching not only for the pink birds but also for the resignation of Edi Rama, as his long 13-year tenure as PM failed to solve long-standing problems like corruption and improving basic services. “We are getting bigger and we are here until he resigns. Not only for biodiversity but for every injustice ​we face,” said student Albano Lushi.

The project, initiated by Jared Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump who “fell in love with Albania” on a trip, Rama who met them on that same trip described them as “very nice, humble...humanly good people.”

Kanye West turned 49 after celebrating his birthday on June 8. According to TMZ, Ye celebrated his birthday while performing at the Netherlands ' GelreDome Stadium in Arnhem. 

The American newspaper reported that it was unclear whether the helicopter was shot down by Iranian fire, suffered a technical malfunction, or encountered some other problem.

The cause of the crash and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, according to the newspaper.

Reuters reported that it was not immediately clear whether the Apache was shot down by the Iranian army or whether the U.S. helicopter faced a mechanical error.

However, U.S. President Donald Trump said regarding the crash, "The pilots are fine," as he spoke on the runway at John F. Kennedy International Airport before ​returning to Washington, D.C.

The president continued, "Nobody injured."

According to Euronews, Trump's attendance prompted "ultra-tight" security measures, causing chaos outside the Manhattan stadium. Reports indicate that fans without tickets were forced several blocks away from the stadium, and watch parties excited to watch the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs were also banned.

Minority Leader of the United States Senate Chuck Schumer also took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his stance on Trump's attendance in several posts. 

He wrote, "During one of the best moments NYC has enjoyed in decades, (Trump) makes it all about himself. Trump should LEAVE US ALONE! He's not wanted here." 

Schumer added in another post, "All because Donald Trump wanted to make it about himself. I trust New Yorkers will let him hear how they feel about that," in reference to a video showing people waiting an hour to get into Madison Square Garden.

Officials told ticket holders to arrive two hours early due to tight security screenings. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a news conference, "The message is simple: celebrate the Knicks, but avoid the MSG area tonight if you do not have tickets for the game." 

Another video captured crowds booing the US President during a watch party in Bryant Park. Aside from Trump, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and several other well-known celebrities attended the game.
