Image 1 of 8: Most talked-about act, Syrian Ayman Khalaf left us in happy tears as we cried our way through his comical audition. He started off so-called singing, but the buzzers soon drowned out his bum-notes. His 2nd go an hour later left us no more convinced about his acting ability. If he left you in LMAO-mode, then Ayman will stay with you for a while!
Image 1 of 8: Mad-cow disease? More like mad about the cow. We get cow-worship, but Egyptian Mohammad Atiyyeh's talent is serenading his bovine beast! This AGT act was described as “not right in the head”. Atiyyeh lugged his cow “Soso” from Egypt and recited a love poem - self-penned- to her. It was bye for Mo and his beloved (the cow not the Mrs).
Image 1 of 8: On the chin! Love changed everything for Said Elshdeed, who declared his for judge Najwa Karam on TV. While carrying heavy items on his chin was impressive, the real feat lay in the love labor behind the chin: he sweated 2 days out without food or drink to afford Najwa's record in '97, and came out with 4 yeses and a kiss from his amour in 2013.
Image 1 of 8: Shake ya ass, watch ya hips: Who said belly-dancing is the preserve of women? Egyptian male contestant Mohammad Iraqi's hips were as good for it as any lady pelvis, as he showed the judges how it's really done. His ‘expressive’ shaking like an Egyptian (not an Iraqi) and grand gyrating techniques granted him a place in Round 2. More please!
Image 1 of 8: Golden wonder-boy RIP: The Boy with the 'Golden Legs's' 15 mins of fame were short-lived. Thirteen year-old Ahmed El Sherief, whose outstanding acrobatics act with his granddad received 4 yeses from the judges, died shortly after the show in a tragic twist of events, by car accident. MBC dedicated that episode of AGT to the deceased boy's talent.
Image 1 of 8: Female, veiled and that's a 'rap'!: ‘Hajje’ Mayyam Mahmoud feels that her head-scarf isn't at odds with her rapping. Her honest & witty lyrics had audience and judges in raptures. This rebel with a cause is against being judged for her headscarf; her message to those listening is “Use your brain and I'll use my vocals.” 4 yeses -- Word!
Image 1 of 8: Charity case or talent taste? While contestant Nadeer Ammar from Morocco deserved a standing ovation for his courage in combating severe autism, his 4 yes winning juggling act stirred controversy. Nadeer managed a big smile on his face while directing his hands. Was the judges' decision clouded with sympathy? Now, it’s for the audience to decide.
Image 1 of 8: Turks Got Talent? Fans of dubbed Turkish TV series “Fatimah” were thrilled by the appearance of actor Engin Akyurek (Karim) on their talent show. But it was only his Lebanese lookalike, contestant Samer bou Khaz'a, whose extraordinary keyboard skills were harder to imitate. He played the instrument backwards. The proof? 4 yeses from the judges.
Every year, before the new season of Arabs Got Talent hijacks our screens and takes over our lives again, we think: “How can the acts get any wackier than the year before?” Judging by Season 3, the bar for wacky is always being raised! And we say, hell, the wackier the better! It’s all about entertainment and lol-ing at the delusional acts taking on the AGT stage, after all. #awkward!
Now that we are deep into Season 3 mode, we’ve discovered the answer! Full disclosure? We don’t really mind all the “out there” contestants; the cray cray acts are actually half the charm of the hit talent show. Let’s admit it, we all secretly enjoy the auditions-gone-wrong just a tad more than the good ones.
All lunatic glorifying aside, we must give credit where credit is due and shout out the few, the proud, the competitors with actual seeds of talent. They weren’t all bad this time around, some were ‘sick’! These cool tricksters were memorable for their brilliant talents and stage presence. But were they good enough to avoid the fate of being buzzed off? Can they outperform those dreaded buzzers that stand between contestants and their ticket to ride to Round 2.
So, whether those acts were booed off the stage with chants of ‘Off! Off! Off!’ or received a standing ovation from an impressed audience, we’ve selected 8 of the most memorable auditions of AGT Season 3 to refresh your memory before the final showdown. For the diehard hooked viewers to those have missed out so far this season, here’s your cheat sheet and chance to tune in to the juiciest jams and the magic moments. The stand-outs and the outstanding, who stood out from the crowd and who should have sat out or stayed behind the scenes?
