Image 1 of 8: Haifa Wehbe and Ahmad Abu Hashima: if this didn’t rock your world then nothing will. The split nearly divided a region as Egyptian Brotherhood connections emerged and Lebanese Haifa claimed the pain was all hers. Arab men picked their tongues up from the floor
Image 1 of 8: Rania Yousef and Karim Al Shabrawi: at each other’s throats and in and out of the law courts, Rania and Karim’s divorce could not have been messier. Rania’s restraining order against her mother-in-law did not win her the moral high ground.
Image 1 of 8: Sherine Abdel Wahab and Mohammad Mustafa: de-nile is not just a river in Egypt for this pair of divorcé-wannabes. Months of separation but still no official papers for the couple and Sherine hinted recently that a make-up could be on the cards.
Image 1 of 8: Ghada Abdel Raziq and Mohammad Foudah: Ghada tried everything from religious pilgrimages to on-off-on again hijab head coverings to fix her marriage but nothing could curb her hubby’s cheating and they divorced in November.
Image 1 of 8: Tamer Hosny and Basma Bosil: poor Basma felt the wrath of Tamer’s female fans when she took him off the market and up the aisle. The Moroccan beauty tried out “traditional wifely” but still can’t win over the Egyptian hearts and minds.
Image 1 of 8: Deema Baya'ah and Tayem Hassan: as soon as those divorce papers came through Deema took ‘single and ready to mingle’ to a new level. Ten years of marriage behind her, the actress took ten months to get back down the aisle.
Image 1 of 8: Hussein Fahmi and Liqa Sweidan: this classy couple of stars kept their personal life under wraps despite divorcing earlier this year. Fans were shocked and stayed that way, as the pair never divulged the reasons behind the split.
Image 1 of 8: Dominique Hourani and Ali Reda al Mashi: Lebanese actress, Dominique, has obviously never heard of TMI as she spilled her guts publicly on her husband’s cheating and her desperate attempts to divorce. Better luck next year Dominique!
Nothing is more demanding than keeping up with the celebrity’s love life. Unlike ordinary types who settle down with one person, the celebrity moves from one marriage to another, often with only months to separate them.
But when they do split up, the news is bigger than Gaza rockets or Syrian civil war. For the celebrity, a love lost must be splashed all over the headlines, preferably following a series of candid interviews about their own pain, the dreaded mother-in-law and some suggestion of government interference.
A celebrity divorce would not be the same without some suggestion of ulterior motives and dodgy dealings. The perfect scandalous mix should also include a religious pilgrimage and rumors of cheating.
However, the same can’t be said for the get-togethers for if a male celebrity dare to date someone outside their country of origin, legions of angry Arab women will rise up to revolt.
The perfect celebrity wife must be unattractive enough to placate female fans but pretty enough to be taken out to public events and woe betide her if she can’t cook or (shock!) wants to live outside the region.
In the end, the most important part of any celebrity marriage or divorce is to talk about it at every moment possible, preferably with cameras rolling.
