Ahly star Mohamed Abou-Treika has been suspended for two months and fined LE500.000 for refusing to participate in the Egypt Super Cup on Sunday, the club announced on Monday.

"Ahly's technical staff decided to ban Abou-Treika for two months and fine him LE500.000. He is also stripped off the captain's armband," read a statement on the Cairo giants' official website.

The veteran playmaker missed Ahly's 2-1 win over ENPPI in support of the demands of the team's Ultras fans, who reject the resumption of domestic football until the perpetrators of Port Said's disaster are brought to justice.

Abou-Treika's decision angered the club's board, which insisted that the player would be "severely sanctioned."

"The management took into consideration the fact that it's the first mistake for the player, who has a great history, since he joined the club," football director Sayed Abdel-Hafiz was quoted as saying on the club's website.

"However, the club has its own rules that should be respected to maintain its principals and traditions," he added.
