Arsenal's Wilshere explains secret behind his goalscoring form
Cesc Fabregas was probably Arsenal's last major goal scorer from midfield and every team with title aspirations certainly needs such a player. Arsenal appear to have found two of them in a single season. Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey have both been experiencing their best seasons in front of goal. Ramsey has scored 13 goals so far, while Wilshere is on four goals for the season.
Wilshere says that the better goal returns are largely down to his experience. He says that it is difficult to command the respect of his teammates when young, but it starts to come with age and experience. This allows players to relax in front of goal. According to Arsenal's official website, he said:
“Once you get older and [more] comfortable, players around you trust you. You get a little bit fitter as well, you can get forward a bit more.
"When you’re in front of goal you've watched players in the past and you’ve learnt from your past mistakes. You relax and that's the only way you're going to do well.
“As you've seen with Aaron [Ramsey] this year, you grow up a little bit and you relax in front of goal."
Wilshere is regarded as one of England's finest young talents, but he has surprisingly scored just six times in his career. Since he is already about to double this tally, it would therefore be a good time to consider that he is emerging into a goal scoring midfielder.
The 21-year-old scored a brace against Marseille to put Arsenal on the brink of qualification to the Champions League knockout stages. Despite having picked up 12 points so far, Arsenal are yet to qualify. Wilshere believes that this is further proof of the intense competition in the Champions League.
Midfielders like Frank Lampard consistently find themselves scoring more than 15 goals per season, but Wilshere is setting a more modest target for this campaign. He says that he would be happy with 10 goals and he seems on course to achieve it.
A win against Napoli in the next round will be enough to see Arsenal progress as the group winners.
