Arsenal boss Wenger discusses Champions League clash with Napoli
Arsene Wenger has stated that there will be no change in the mentality of Arsenal in their final Champions League group match against Napoli. Despite taking 12 points from the group so far, Arsenal are yet to seal progression to the knockout stages. They can achieve this, along with topping the group, with a win against Napoli on Wednesday. A draw, though, will be enough for Arsenal from a qualification point of view.
Wenger has said in the pre-match press conference that Arsenal will not be playing for a draw. According to the club's official site, he said:
"I don't think we should approach the game thinking that we need to avoid a defeat. We believe that we're good enough to go there and get a win.
"We don't need to change our attitude, we need to keep it going the way we have been and that should give us a result."
One of Arsenal's best performances this season came in the first half against Napoli at the Emirates. Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud scored the goals for Wenger's men, as they destroyed a Napoli team that was flying high in the league back then. Wojciech Szczesny says that he did not touch on the ball in the first half and it was a measure of the dominance they had over Napoli. Szczesny said:
"I think in the first half-hour [of the first Napoli game] we were frightening.
"I never touched the ball so that should tell you a lot."
However, he has admitted that it will be difficult to reproduce such an extraordinary performance partly because this match will be at the Stadio San Paolo.
Rafa Benitez' men do not come into the encounter in the best possible shape. They have only a single win in the last five matches of all competitions. This form has seen them slip a massive eight points behind leaders Juventus. Back when they faced Arsenal in the reverse fixture, they were jostling for the top spot with Juventus and Roma. Wenger continued:
"I think it's important to finish top. This year as well most of the big boys are top of their groups so coming on top of our group will give us probably a better draw in the last 16."
Arsenal's four match winning run may have come to a halt following the 1-1 draw with Everton, but they remain extremely strong going by the recent form.
Borussia Dortmund take on Olympic Marseille in the other group match.
