Beckham set to land £20m deal to become 'poster boy' of Qatar 2022 World Cup
Beckham set to land £20m deal to become face of Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup
Beckham has vowed to donate his three million wages at new club Paris Saint-Germain to charity, but the 37-year-old footie hero is set to bank a far more lucrative prize with the mega-rich Gulf state, the Sun reports.
Qatar, which was controversially picked to host the 2022 World Cup, wants Beckham to be its poster boy, the paper added.
Qatar needs to raise its profile amid claims of corruption and fan outrage at the decision to award it the World Cup, and insiders claimed Beckham's five-month stint with PSG, which is owned by the investment arm of the Qatar Government, would start a multi-million pound tie-in, the paper reported.
Beckham has been pencilled in as a player coach in the Qatar Stars League later this year as part of his long-term role as ambassador for the World Cup and with bonuses, the package could be worth 20 million pounds over two years.
A source said the PSG deal is just the start, as Beckham is donating his salary to charity but he's no fool, adding the former Manchester United star is the only sports star with the kudos, image and appeal to make the world look at Qatar. (ANI)
