Blatter's ex-'right-hand man' Champagne may put forward bid as new FIFA president

The former right-hand man of FIFA President Sepp Blatter may reportedly put forward a bid to succeed his former boss in his position in the world soccer governing body after inviting the world's media to a news conference in London.

Blatter has hinted he might stand again in next year's elections, while UEFA president Michel Platini has also been widely tipped to challenge the position.

However, Sport24 reports that Jerome Champagne, FIFA's deputy Secretary General from 2002 until 2005, had sent an email to the world's media on Friday inviting them to a news conference, leaving little doubts as to his intentions, although he refused to confirm that the event was to announce his bid.

Champagne said that he could not stop the speculations, as there had been none about him for the last two years since he published his document regarding the future of FIFA and the globalisation of the game, although a source said that it would come as no surprise if Champagne announces his bid for presidency in the conference.

In 2012, Champagne's 20,000-word document outlined some far-sighted views, while building on FIFA's traditional strengths and central to his thinking are plans to expand the FIFA executive committee, bringing national Football Associations (FA) into the seat of governance and making FIFA more open and transparent.

Champagne was at FIFA during many of Blatter's woes but was forced out of the organisation after political infighting six months before the World Cup started in South Africa in 2010, the report added. (ANI)
