Manchester United v Bayern Munich: Projected lineups in opening UCL tie
Manchester United v Bayern Munich: Projected lineups in opening UCL tie

Manchester United host Bayern Munich in the first of their two biggest matches of the season as their European run is on the line.

Although the Red Devil's domestic troubles have been well noted there is perhaps a bit of proof that the club is not quite so horrible with their having made it to the quarter finals of the biggest competition in Europe.

However, Bayern Munich are the defending champions of Europe and are yet to lose in the domestic league having clinched the Bundesliga in record time with seven matches to spare.

Pep Guardiola has gotten the better of United before during his time with Barcelona and will look to do so again with Bayern at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Robin Van Persie will be sorely missed after his hat-trick performance again Olympiakos in the previous round, Patrice Evra will be sidelined due to suspension and Juan Mata is cup-tied to Chelsea.

Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling and Johnny Evans are all doubts but Rafael has declared himself ready to go as he will be charged with marking French international and Bayern star Franck Ribery.

Bayern are still without both Holger Badstuber and Thiago Alcantara while Dante will miss due to suspension but the rest of the German side's stars are ready to go.

United XI: De Gea: Rafael, Jones, Vidic, Buttner; Giggs, Carrick; Valencia, Kagawa, Januzaj; Rooney.

Bayern XI: Neuer: Rafinha, Boateng, Martinez, Alaba; Lahm; Robben, Kroos, Schweinsteiger, Ribery; Mandzukic.
