Chelsea boss Benitez ready for crucial Man Utd clash
Even though Chelsea are going through a sorry season, the latest episode of which saw them lose to Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League last Thursday, Benitez is confident his side can shock the Reds to make it to the semi-finals.
“It’s a positive. It’s good and it’s a challenge for us,” the Blues boss said.
“In terms of the focus of the players, it’s good. We have an opportunity very quickly to change things.
“It’s a good competition, a very exciting competition and Chelsea, as a club and as a team, have been doing really well.
“Hopefully we can carry on doing well after this game. That means that we will be through.”
If there’s one competition the West Londoners wouldn’t mind playing in at the moment, it’s the FA Cup. Since 2007, the Blues have dominated with four wins in six years, while interim manager Rafael Benitez lifted the trophy with Liverpool in 2006.
However, this year hasn’t been easy for the Blues, with them needing a replay to beat Brentford. All that took place while the fans were upping the ante in their aim to let Benitez know he wasn’t wanted at Stamford Bridge.
Against this backdrop, a tie at Old Trafford in the one competition that you have a good chance of winning might not exactly be high up on the wish list. Not least because United will doubtless be keen to get back to winning ways after their controversial Champions League loss to Real Madrid last week.
Meanwhile, John Obi Mikel (L) claims the players are up for the Cup clash and ready to prove they’ve still got what it takes to win trophies.
“I’ve won it four times and I’m still hungry for it. I still want to win five, six, seven times,” the midfielder said. “I still want to win trophies for this club and new players want to put hands on one of these trophies.”
