Mourinho hints at summer move for Balotelli
Chelsea boss Mourinho hints at summer move for Mario Balotelli
Jose Mourinho has hinted that he may be ready to make a move for AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli. The pair had a difficult relationship during the two years at Inter Milan, but Mourinho has stated that there were good times as well. Chelsea are widely believed to be in the market for a new striker in the summer. Mourinho’s recent comments about his strikers finding it difficult to score goals has all but confirmed their intentions to bring in a new centre forward.
The likes of Diego Costa and Radamel Falcao are heavily linked with the blues, but Balotelli has always been a name mentioned for a reunion with Mourinho since his departure from Inter Milan in 2010. According to the Evening Standard, Mourinho, after becoming the new football ambassador for Yahoo, said:
"In football you never know the future. Balotelli is with a big club at the moment but you never know the future.
"They want to keep the best players and want to keep the best Italian players. But Mario has already been in English football before.
"I'm not going to be manager of Milan or the Italy national team, but he's a good kid and somebody I'd like to work with again."
The 23-year-old has always been regarded as a special talent, but he has been unable to compete with the best in the world due to Milan’s current plight. The seven-time European champions are blighted by several financial problems, which has forced them to sell most of their stars and get along with loan players.
They are likely to finish outside the top three, which is necessary for Champions League qualification for Italian clubs, this campaign. The lack of European football next season may force them to sell players like Balotelli.
Mourinho has hinted at a potential reunion – not by becoming the manager of Milan or the Italian national team. This would suggest that Chelsea may make a bid for the Italian international. Balotelli also hinted the same in recent past. He said:
"Of course I would like to play under Jose again.
"In my first days at Inter we had some problems, but then it turned into a mutual respect, and now we have a real friendship.”
Costa may be priced out of a move, while Falcao’s injury may have taken the edge out of his game. At 23, Balotelli also fits into the profile of player Chelsea are looking to sign right now.
