Egypt move up in FIFA world ranking
FIFA published the April edition of the world football rankings on Thursday, revealing that Egypt has risen from 72to 68 in the global rankings. Egypt also moved up one place to 15 in the Confederation of African Football ranking.
The Pharaohs climb in the world rankings is due to the 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe in the Group G World Cup Qualifying match at the end of March.
Egypt's ranking had suffered after the national team failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations in 2012 and 2013. The team’s fortunes have turned in their bid to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. They currently sit unbeaten at the top of Group G of the Africa region with nine points.
The FIFA world ranking saw other interesting climbers and fallers. Kyrgyzstan jumped 59 positions to 142 in the ranking, having played three matches in March and winning them all. England and Italy both dropped three places to 7 and 8 respectively and Spain retained its position as the top team in the world, followed closely by Germany.
