England fourth in FIFA rankings despite Euro 2012 exit
England rises to fourth in FIFA rankings despite Euro failure
Despite another penalty shoot-out loss, England's exit after four unbeaten games including topping Group D will see them move up from their current ranking of sixth when the new list is announced next week.
Unless either Portugal or Italy wins the tournament, Hodgson's men will start next season in fourth, only fractionally behind third-placed Uruguay.
For Hodgson and England the improvement will be a justification of his brief and so far unbeaten spell in charge in which he has restored lost credibility and given the national side a platform for the advances that need to be made.
The FIFA calculation is based on results over the previous four calendar years, meaning that England have also benefited from the results under Hodgson's little lamented predecessor Fabio Capello.
If Spain and Germany progress to Sunday's final showdown in Kiev, then the winner would also be crowned as the new world number one. (ANI)
