Five young English defenders to follow in 2014
Five young EPL defenders to follow in 2014
What a task England manager Roy Hodgson has in selecting brightest and the best young defenders from the English Premier League. Amongst the outstanding defenders currently plying their trade in top English teams, he has options such as Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling, Rafael Da Silva, Micah, Ryan Shawcross, Kieren Gibbs.
These players are in the range of 24-25 years of age, but there are many more promising and younger defenders currently stepping up in English Premier League that are going to see the current crop of star defenders have to keep an eye on their place.
In no particular order here is a list of young players that could soon be on the short list to battle for a place at the World Cup in 2014 if they can break into their first teams on a regular basis.
1. Luke Shaw
The 19-year-old Southampton and England U-21 defender has already had 18 appearances this season, catching the eyes of top guns around the league.
Consistent and up to the task, the defender should have an easy ride to future National team call-ups if he remains on his current path.
2. Phil Jones
Sure Manchester United is suffering this season, mainly due to subdued performance of their experienced defenders. However, Phil Jones, the 22-year-old defender has secured David Moyes’ trust already with 13 appearances this campaign.
He is slowly on the verge of forming the transition from old and shaky Manchester United defenders to a new generation of young motivated defenders.
3. Craig Dawson
Craig Dawson is a 21-year-old defender currently playing at West Brom. He has played well for England U-21 team in recent games, however he awaits more playing time at his club to prove his consistency.
4. John Stones
At only 19 years old, Central defender John Stones is mostly warming the bench for Everton, having only played 200 minutes this season. However, the England U-21 defender has talent and time in his favour as he seeks his opportunity for more playing time at first team.
5. Carl Jenkinson
Arsenal’s 21-year-old talented defender has six appearances so far this season, a much improved stat from same time last season. A defender who plays better in each game and against tough opponents, will likely have a bright year in 2014.
