Daniel Sturridge has pulled out of the England squad ahead of Monday's opening Euro 2016 qualifier with Switzerland after sustaining a thigh injury, the Football Association has confirmed.
The Liverpool ace limped out of a Three Lions training session on Friday morning with the problem and has now returned to Merseyside after a scan confirmed that the injury was too severe for him to feature in Basel.
Sturridge's absence is a further blow to England manager Roy Hodgson, who reacted angrily to media questioning after his side's laboured 1-0 win over Norway at Wembley on Wednesday evening.
Arsenal's signing Danny Welbeck is the likeliest candidate to replace Sturridge against the Swiss, though Wayne Rooney may also be moved into the No.9 position as he continues his quest to become England's all-time top scorer.
Hodgson has not called up a replacement for Sturridge.
