Galatasaray deny John Terry rumors
There have been no major transfer rumours surrounding John Terry in the last four years. The links with Manchester City in 2009 remain as the closest Terry has come to leaving Chelsea. However, the possibility of Chelsea's captain leaving Stamford Bridge this summer seems high indeed. He is out of contract in the next few months and there has been no talk of a new deal. Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole are also in a similar situation.
Galatasaray have been linked with a move for Terry in the last few weeks. They are managed by Roberto Mancini, while the squad contains former Chelsea star Didier Drogba. The presence of Drogba has been a major factor towards the rumours, which Galatasaray have now denied. According to Turkish Football, the club's Chief Executive Officer Lutfi Ar?bo?an said:
"John Terry is a great player however, our transfer priority is not to sign a centre-back. Our main goal is to target younger players and reduce the average age of the team.
"Terry is definitely not in any of our plans, neither Roberto Mancini or the board have shown any interest and no enquiries have been made."
Galatasaray may have brought in stars like Drogba and Wesley Sneijder in the last 12 months, but it has considerably increased the age of their squad. They are also finding it difficult to comply with rules that require a certain number of homegrown players in the squad. It would be strange if they brought in yet another foreigner even though it would be a great player like Terry.
Terry will turn 33 years of age in a few weeks time and his contract may be running out in a few months, but he has been playing some of the best football of his career in the last three months. During Rafa Benitez' short regime, many questioned Terry's future at top-level football let alone Chelsea.
Now, though, he seems to be reaching a level last seen during 2004 and 2005. Of course, it would be difficult – considering his age – for him to maintain the same level of performance throughout the season, but he still has the capability to deliver excellent performances at the top level.
