Mahmoud Goudarzi, Iran's minister of sport and youth, is optimistic of winning eight medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Iran left London with a total of 12 medals (4 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze), finishing seventeenth in the overall medal standings.

This was also the most successful Olympics for the Middle East, winning the largest number of medals at a single games, and surpassing by just double the record from Athens.

“We have grabbed 33 quota places for Olympics so far. We hope to earn 53 quota places as we did in the previous edition,” Goudarzi told TV sport program “Varzesh VA Mardom” on Friday.

“I think we could win up to six medals in Rio. I am also optimistic of winning eight medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro,” he added.
