Liverpool target new defender
Liverpool’s defensive center half depth has suffered a major blow with what looks to be season long injury sustained by Sebastian Coates as confirmed by club manager Brendan Rodgers Thursday afternoon.
The Uruguayan defender picked up the injury on international duty with his national team last week before the opening day of the new campaign and now looks to have sidelined him for the rest of the year.
It is a horror story that all managers unfortunately have to face when they see their players leave their training ground for a friendly just before seasons open. It is a harsh reality that both Liverpool and their defender must now face:
"I feel for big Seba because he's obviously played the latter part of the game and picked up a similar injury to what Martin [Kelly] had last year.
It's probably going to rule him out for most of the season, which is disappointing for him.
He's never given me a minute's problem since he's been here and this was probably a year where he needed to go out and play. Unfortunately that will put an end to that.”
With the loss of Coates, Rodgers now has commented as seen in his press conference on LFCTV that he is looking to secure a new defender before the close of the transfer window in order to allow young Andre Wisdom the chance to go out on loan and get more match time:
“It's something that we're looking at, certainly, a player to come in in that position. It's to strengthen the squad but also to allow some of our younger players to develop.
For us to maximise Andre Wisdom and his talent, I need to get him some games.
The idea is to get him out on loan; but I can only do that if we bring in someone with a bit more experience to come in and support the group. It's two-fold really. It's certainly a position we're looking at."
Liverpool are reported to have rejected an offer of £10 million for defender Martin Skrtel from Italian side Napoli according to BBC Sport and the fact that Rodgers is looking at spending for another defender as well has done well to scupper any belief that the Slovakian defender is going anywhere.
