It may have taken over 20 seasons but Manchester United’s evergreen midfield star, Ryan Giggs broke one of the greatest records in European football on Wednesday October 2, 2013, when he made his 145 appearance in the UEFA Champions League.

Giggs now has been a part of more Champions League matches than former Real Madrid star Raul, AC Milan’s Paolo Maldini, Barcelona’s Xavi, Clarence Seedorf and fellow former Manchester United star Paul Scholes.

Speaking to MUTV, the official station of Manchester United following the match Giggs made the following comments about having broken the record:

"It means a lot. It’s the pinnacle of European football and to play that many games is obviously special."

However, Giggs was understandably more concerned with the club only picking up a point away to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukraine having failed to maintain the Red Devil’s lead that had been handed to them by Danny Welbeck in the first half:

“When you’re playing for United and you go 1-0 ahead, you expect to be able to see the game out.

But fair play to Shakhtar - they’ve got some decent players and they put us under a lot of pressure. We’ve won our first game and drew a very tough away game so we’ll take that.

We are in a good position; it’s a tough place to come this[Shakhtar’s Donbass Arena]. Hopefully we can get a few victories from the next couple of games and that’ll put us in a good position."

The club will face Sunderland in the English Premier League this coming weekend and having failed to live up to expectations so far in the league this season they will hope that a match against the club at the bottom of the table is enough to see them bounce back.
