Man City vs Bayern Munich UCL projected lineups
However, City faltered for the second time this season in the English Premier League against a side that they should have defeated on paper when their defense let Aston Villa complete a 3-2 comeback at Villa Park over the weekend.
Bayern maintained their perfect record on the season with another domestic victory and will look to keep their UCL record perfect as well.
Speaking ahead of the match City manager Manuel Pellegrini discussed how it is better to play after wining your league match before midweek, but his side are playing well:
"It's always better to play in the Champions League when you have won the Premier League game before but the team is playing with trust and confidence so I hope we can do a good match again next Wednesday.
In general, I was very happy with the way we played. It is very difficult at this moment to improve with Bayern because they won the last three competitions but he will find a way because he is a very good manager."
Pep Guardiola has an impressive track record against Pellegrini dating back to his time at the helm of FC Barcelona, but the Spaniard quickly dismissed that as a non-factor for Wednesday nights match as he praised his counterpart ahead of their clash in his pre-match press conference:
"That is not important. If I beat him all the time it is because I was the trainer of one of the best teams in the world. That's why sometimes it was easy for me.
I'm really impressed with Manuel because I would like to be like him. No matter which team he is training, his teams always play the same way.
His trademark in his team is always there. It's always a pleasure to play against Manuel because he loves to play football. It will be a good test for both teams."
Bastian Schweinsteiger will make his Champions League return after spending time out due to injury while supporting line of Franck Ribery, Toni Kroos, Tomas Muller and Arjen Robben will be a test for the City back line.
Likewise the attacking prowess of Manchester City's front group of Samir Nasri, Jesus Navas, Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo will test the resolve of Jerome Boateng and Daniel Van Buyten.
A showdown of former La Liga managers is certain to see a great match in Manchester at the Etihad.
