Daniele De Rossi is regarded as one of the finest Italian midfielders, and quite possibly, one of the best defensive midfielders of his generation. The 30-year-old has been with Roma throughout his entire career, but it has not been due to the shortage of interest. Over the years, numerous clubs like Manchester City, Manchester United, and Real Madrid (not to mention the Italian clubs) have tried to prize him away from the Stadio Olimpico. De Rossi does not regret their futile attempts because he is more than happy to stay at Roma.

Roma manager Rudi Garcia revealed a few days ago that Manchester United made an official offer for De Rossi in the summer. Roma are not in the same league as the likes of AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus when it comes to title winning capabilities. De Rossi acknowledges that he would have had the opportunity to win numerous titles if he had moved to the likes of Barcelona or Manchester United. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said,

"If I had gone to play elsewhere, such as Barcelona, I probably would've won more. My story is the same as Totti's. But then you think of the people of Rome and the love of the fans, so that thought goes."

Of course, there would have been times in his stellar career when De Rossi would have thought about moving from Roma, but this interview will certainly put him in an even loftier position amongst Roma supporters. There is a lot of attention given to players moving for various reasons like money. Yet, De Rossi is proof that there is still loyalty left in football. Francesco Totti is arguably an even more loyal player at 36 years of age.

It is expected that Totti will retire from football in the next few years, which will free up the captain's armband for De Rossi to takeover. De Rossi, though, has said that he is not worried about the armband as long as he remains as a symbol amongst the fans.
