Wayne Rooney was once again imperious for Manchester United, as the striker's two goals helped David Moyes' team grab a point from their match against Tottenham. Rooney has been sublime in recent weeks and after the talks about leaving in the summer, there is a growing consensus that United need the England international even with the presence of Robin van Persie.

He has just turned 28 and has just 18 months left on his contract. This leaves United in a precarious position if they fail to agree a new contract before the summer.

The player power comes into effect with just 12 months remaining on the contract and United would have seen this first hand with their transfer target Robert Lewandowski of Borussia Dortmund. Rooney is already one of the highest earning footballers in the world, but he could command a significant rise in his salary come summer. Yet, David Moyes has hinted that the contract talks may not begin for a while. According to Sky Sports, he said:

"When will we talk to him about the contract? I don't really know. I think we are fine. We are just moving on from the summer. It will be done in good course.

"The appropriate people will talk when the time is right."

The striker has scored 12 goals and created a further 10 assists in all competitions. He is starting to assert more influence on the team than van Persie, who is struggling with a groin injury.

Moyes' comment during pre-season about Rooney being a backup to van Persie is thought to be the chief reason behind the striker ready to submit an official transfer request. Chelsea made two offers for him, which were ultimately rejected by United. Moyes' latest comments could potentially come back to hurt him later on.

Both Rooney and Moyes will be facing their former club Everton in the midweek action. Even though he played the full 90 minutes against Tottenham, Rooney is expected to start on Wednesday.
