Manchester United may not have been able to convince former hero Cristiano Ronaldo to return to Old Trafford, but it looks as if they've done a good enough job to coerce current star Robin van Persie to stay for a little while longer.
Just one day after Ronaldo decided to commit his future to Real Madrid by putting pen to paper on a contract that will see him in the Spanish capital till he his 33, Robin Van Persie has now declared that he sees his future in Manchester.
'I have three more years to go and I would like to stay longer,' Van Persie said in an exclusive interview with MUTV. 'I know, and I see people around me, making decisions where I think these guys will look back and say "was that a good one?". I don't want that.
'I want to play as long as possible at the highest level.'
Van Persie moved to England in 2004, joining Arsenal during an extremely special time. Despite all the talent on hand at Arsenal at the time, the Dutch international only won the FA Cup and the Community Shield during his eight years at the club.
The 30-year-old left Arsenal last summer, joining Premier League rivals Manchester United, after a fantastic season that saw him win the Premier League's Golden Boot. His form didn't slow after he became a Red Devil, as he secured another Golden Boot last year with his league high 26 goals.
In the interview, Van Persie once again emphasized how important it was for him as a player to win trophies with his club.
'That (winning trophies) is what it is all about,' he said. 'Last year we got one trophy in four. Now we have to look at it from the opposite side.
'We have the chance to get five this year. How many do we get out of those five? In my opinion we should be able to win two or three.'With new manager David Moyes taking over the manager's seat at Old Trafford, United have had a bit of slow start to their standards in the League. Having already lost to Liverpool and drawn Chelsea, the Red Devils will look to kickstart their Champions League campaign on Tuesday on the right foot.
Speaking about Europe's top club competition, Van Persie discussed his single regret from last season - United's exit to Real Madrid in the Champions League
'It is probably my only regret about last year,' Van Persie said.
'The referee played an important part but I should have scored at least one or two goals in those games. I didn't, which I don't like. I have to improve on that.
'Hopefully we can do better this year.' (via the Daily Mirror)Van Persie's desire to stay comes just one week after several outlets had reported that the Dutch international was unhappy with Moyes and the current state of affairs in Manchester, reports that were quickly denied by the player.
United fans, would you be happy to see Van Persie stick around Old Trafford beyond his 33rd birthday, or will the club need to bring in top young talent to continue being successful?
