In a surprise move, the two boards from the Al Wasl Football Company headed by Marwan Bin Bayat and the Al Wasl Football Club resigned en masse late on Thursday citing poor results for the move.
Their resignations were immediately accepted by club president Shaikh Ahmad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who in turn has reportedly re-appointed Dr. Mohammad Bin Fahad as the chairman of Al Wasl Football Club.
Now Maradona’s future is up in the air, with one of the first decisions of the new board of directors likely to be whether to keep him in the Al Wasl hotseat.
“Everything changes now with the resignation of the board of directors,” an Al Wasl source told Gulf News.
“The new board will have to take several key decisions in a short period of time. They will have to decide if they want to keep Maradona and they will have to decide on the senior football team’s pre-season preparations for the new season,” the source added.
In light of this development, the next 24 hours will be crucial as the new board of directors of the club and company get re-constituted and ratified by Shaikh Ahmad.
“Things should be clearer after another few hours. We will have to wait and see what decisions are taken,” the source said.
The resignations come after Maradona endured a disappointing first season in charge at Al Wasl, who finished eighth in the Pro-League and crashed out of the President’s Cup and Etisalat Cup at the quarter-final stage.
They then suffered an agonising penalty shootout defeat to Al Muharraq in the GCC Champions League final.
