Martinez claims Man Utd transfer target Baines going nowhere
Roberto Martinez has once again stated that the defender Leighton Baines is not for sale. Manchester United were interested in both Baines and Marouane Fellaini; they succeeded in getting one of them. Baines ended up staying at Goodison Park because the two clubs failed to agree a transfer fee. It is expected that they may once again in the January transfer window despite Patrice Evra being a regular for the team.
The Frenchman recently scored in the 2-2 draw with Cardiff City, but it seems that Moyes is keen on reinforcing this area of the pitch for the next five years. Patrice Evra certainly cannot offer it at 32 years of age. Baines has been one of the best left-backs in the world and he is close to dislodging Ashley Cole permanently from the England national team. According to the Express, Martinez said:
"We want to have Leighton [Baines] for the long term and that will never change."
United are unlikely to pay any attention to this statement, as Martinez used such words to deny transfer rumours surrounding Baines and Fellaini in the summer. The Belgian ended up leaving Everton for £27 million.
United are keen to strengthen the team substantially in January. They were keen to add several big names during summer, but ended up getting only the Belgian, who appeared to be a panic purchase. So far, he has struggled to settle into the United team, but Moyes is confident that the 26-year-old will soon show his best form.
Baines suffered an injury during Saturday's 3-3 draw with Liverpool. His fractured toe is likely to keep him out until January. This would be a major blow for Everton, but they do have players who are more than capable of deputising in his absence. Gareth Barry, who is on loan from Manchester City, is one such player.
