Germany's Ozil set to miss England clash
German manager Joachim Low will have to rethink some of his World Cup plans after midfielder Sami Khedira tore his anterior cruciate ligament against Italy on Friday evening.
It now looks as if three more players won't be taking part in in the England friendly, as Low has confirmed the likes of Mesut Ozil, Philipp Lahm, and Manuel Neuer have been withdrawn from the squad to rest.
Lahm and Neuer both started for Germany against Italy in Milan, while Ozil was substituted into the match in the 59th minute. The Bayern players have since flown back to Munich instead of London, while Ozil flew back to London but not to take part in Tuesday's match.
"The England game is our last chance before the World Cup to try out one or two new tactical variations and personnel," said Low. (via Sky Sports)
"Philipp Lahm, Manuel Neuer and Mesut Ozil are part of the absolute backbone of our team and for me, it is more important now to give other players a chance to prove themselves in these key positions, particularly against such a strong team as England."
Sky Sports News confirms that Arsenal center back Per Mertesacker has rejoined the squad after missing out on Friday's match due to illness.
The imposing central defender came down with the flu before Arsenal's match against Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend and is just now getting back into training.
