Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho Tells Juan Mata to Prove He is Good Enough
Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge comes on the back of the Spanish star having been named the club's Player of the Year in back to back campaigns since his move to London.
This season although Mata has a combined 32 goals and 49 assists in 121 total appearances for the club since first stepping onto the Premier League scene in 2011, he has only managed 145 minutes of pitch time and ahead of Chelsea's match against Fulham on Saturday his manager has sent some interesting comments his direction in the press:
“The reasons why Mata is not playing are things I can speak about only with him.
It’s part of a process with Mata. He can play as a No10, with clever assists and fantastic actions, because he has great talent. But it is another thing to adapt to the way we want to play. At this moment, Oscar is my No10, and if somebody tells me he has not been Chelsea’s best player since the beginning of the season, I’d disagree.
I as a manager have to prove to the fans that I am good, and Mata has to prove that he can dislodge Oscar from the team.
I want to build with Oscar as my No10, and I want the other players to adapt to that and learn how to do things they were not ready to do before.”
While Mata has proven to the Chelsea fans he is good enough the last two seasons and has shown the neutrals that he is one they all wish their side had picked up in the summer of 2011, the Spanish attacking midfielder and at times wide player has, it would appear, a ways to go to impress his new manager.
If the remainder of the current campaign continues to go the way it has, there is perhaps a chance that Mata, who was rumored to be leaving Stamford Bridge a few times this summer, could perhaps look for an exit in January.
