Nadal stunned in Doha
World number three Rafael Nadal made the worst possible start to the new season as he lost to Germany’s Michael Berrer in round one of the Qatar Open on Tuesday.
The Spaniard could not build on a strong start and Berrer, ranked 127th, powered through to win 1-6 6-3 6-4.
Nadal had only faced Berrer twice before, conceding just four games in 6-2 6-1 and 6-0 6-1 victories.
Last week, a rusty Nadal was brushed aside by Andy Murray in an exhibition match.
Earlier in the day, Novak Djokovic started his 2015 season with a swift 6-2 6-1 win over fellow Serbian Dusan Lajovic.
Djokovic needed just 59 minutes to see off his compatriot, putting 72 percent of his first serves in play and succeeding with five of six break-point opportunities.
Third-seeded Tomas Berdych also advanced to the second round with a 6-1 6-4 win over Denis Istomin.
