An already thin squad suffered after the opening day defeat against Aston Villa to leave manager Arsene Wenger with very little options. The likes of Mikel Arteta and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be on the sidelines for months.
They have already failed to get their primary transfer targets like Gonzalo Higuain and Luiz Gustavo. Now, they are looking at alternatives like Newcastle United's Yohan Cabaye. Since moving to Newcastle in 2011, Cabaye has become one of the best midfielders in the Premier league. His ability to defend and attack have made him targets for several clubs including PSG. PSG manager Laurent Blanc recently admitted that he is a huge fan of the player.
However, it is Arsenal who have made their first move in the form of a £10 million bid for the 27-year-old. Newcastle have rejected this offer saying that it is insulting and derogatory. Newcastle valuable player at around £20-£25 million, which would be an amount Arsenal are unlikely to pay. Arsenal value the player at around £15 million. He was left out of the Newcastle United squad that played against Manchester City on Monday night. This is seen as a major indication that he may move in the near future.
"What I can confirm, on the eve of a game, is we’ve had a bid for one of the players which we don’t think is acceptable,” said Pardew to Sky Sports.
Wenger admitted after the Aston Villa match that he would like to bring in at least two or three names. It now appears that the club is chasing their second and third transfer targets.
Arsenal are also looking at Manchester City defender Micah Richards, who is unable to get game time at Etihad stadium. He played very little football last season and the form of Pablo Zabaleta makes it difficult for him to think of first-team opportunities this season as well. He may be interested in a move given that the World Cup is around the corner.
The 25-year-old could cost in excess of £15 million, as clubs always demand a premium for English players. This shouldn't be a problem for a club that reportedly has around £70 million to spend, but has not yet spent a penny.
