The former England striker has been blighted by injuries for the past few seasons, limiting him to bench-warming duties for Manchester United, who he left at the end of last season.
However, keen to still play the 32-year-old is looking to find a club and the UAE outfit has emerged as a possible destination.
The UAE Pro League could have yet another big name set star on its stage with news that Al Shabab are in talks to sign Michael Owen
"Michael Owen has been identified as a candidate to play for Shabab next season and we are in negotiations with his management team," the club announced on Twitter.
"The player's agent is in Dubai to close the deal."
A club spokesman added: "We are in talks with the player and his agent, but no agreement has yet been reached between the parties. Things should become clear soon."
While Owen has failed to hit the heights of his Liverpool and early England days his goal record at both Manchester United (17 in 52 games) and Newcastle (30 in 79 games) isn’t to be sniffed at.
However, on the downside of any possible signing for the Dubai-based club would be his worrying injury record. He hasn’t been able to play regularly since his early Newcastle days and that could well hamper a possible deal.
