Zidane wants to see Gerrard and Liverpool win the Premier League
Real Madrid Legend Wants to See Gerrard and Liverpool Win the League Title
Liverpool’s title challenge this season has been receiving a lot of support from all corners of the globe and this is especially true in the case of several former greats. One such former football icon, Zinedine Zidane, says that Liverpool need to win the title this season for its captain and midfield general, Steven Gerrard. Zidane is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders to have played the game.
The current Real Madrid assistant coach says that it would be a big disaster if Gerrard does not win the league title in such a stellar career. Since making his debut almost two decades ago, Gerrard has been a great player for Liverpool. Even during tough times, he has resisted the urge to leave the club. Many – including Zidane – part of the opinion that Gerrard’s loyalty should also be rewarded with a league title. According to Daily Mail, he said:
"He has had a great career winning many things -- but it would be a big shame for him if he was never to win the league with Liverpool. For everything that he has given -- he deserves a league title.
"He could have played for any team in Europe -- but he turned them down. That sort of loyalty should be rewarded with a title.”
Gerrard came close to leaving on several occasions in the past. The most high-profile incident came in 2005 when he almost signed for Chelsea after having just won the Champions League with Liverpool. The Champions League is one of the several trophies he has lifted as Liverpool captain, but the Premier League trophy has long eluded him. This season, however, he has a chance to put it right.
Gerrard has been orchestrating the midfielder from a different position this season. He has been used almost as a defender by manager Brendan Rodgers. Zidane has admitted that the Gerrard of four or five years ago will never be seen again, but that Gerrard still remains one of the football’s greatest since he had everything. He continued:
"There was a point when Gerrard was the best midfield player in the world. It is unusual to get complete midfield players who can do everything, but that is what he was.
"His legs are not going to be what they were five or six years ago -- but his presence and leadership are invaluable for Liverpool."
At 34 years of age, this is probably Gerrard’s best opportunity to lift the league title. Manchester City’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland has given destiny into Liverpool’s hands.
