Hundreds of civilians were evacuated Sunday from the besieged city of Homs, braving gunmen spraying bullets and lobbing mortar shells to flee as part of a rare three-day truce to relieve a choking blockade, the Associated Press reported.

A commander and military mastermind for the hardline Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) rebel group was killed on Saturday after clashes with the al-Qaeda affliated al-Nusra Front in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, Al Arabiya News Channel reported activists as saying.

The Syrian government began evacuating civilians from the besieged city of Homs on Friday, executing the first stage of a deal struck with the United Nations in a three-day ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to enter the city.
A three-day ceasefire has been agreed as part of what it called a “landmark” deal to allow for the evacuation of civilians from Homs and supplies of humanitarian aid for those who choose to remain, Reuters reported Russia as saying on Friday.
The Syrian government had decided to participate in the second round of peace talks in the Swiss city of Geneva, state television reported Syria’s deputy foreign minister as saying Friday.
Experts from the European Union and eight Arab countries plus Turkey will hold a meeting in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss threats posed by foreign fighters in Syria, a source told Al Arabiya News Channel on Thursday.
