The Syrian conflict has attracted jihadists from around the Muslim world. The West and Western-friendly countries fear that with Assad's downfall Syria may befall the same fate as Afghanistan in the 1980s, becoming a safe haven for Islamists and a launchpad for deadly attacks abroad.
