Based on orders from Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs is looking into singer Arcadi Dochin's suggestion to organize a musical festival that will give a quarter of its revenues to the Syrian rebel forces.
The question is will Syrian Opposition accept Israeli charity?
Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Sunday that Dochin reached out to Lieberman a few days ago, asking for his help in organizing a rock n roll music festival in Israel. He was hoping to give a quarter of all revenues to “the rebels in Syria to get them food and medical supplies”.
The newspaper contacted a high ranking source in the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs saying that Lieberman and several prominent figures in the ministry are looking into the idea in a positive manner and as a part of a grander Israeli campaign announced “to rebel against (Syrian President Bashar) Assad and to stop the massacre being committed by the Syrian regime”.
Dochin was encouraged to call Lieberman's offices following the minister's decision to approach the Red Cross in order to have Israeli humanitarian aid sent to the Syrian people. The singer suggested recruiting a group of Israeli artists for the festival in support of the Syrians.
The newspaper stated that Lieberman's office didn't dismiss the suggestion. The proposal has instead been transferred to interested professional parties in the ministry that have been following up on the situation in Syria.
The source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that “research is being put in a positive direction these days, along with some other ideas to help the Syrian people”.
Dochin confirmed to media outlets that he has indeed approached Lieberman regarding this subject, but remarked that a date for the festival has not been set yet. It is still in its early phases and he had “made the suggestion under a humanitarian pretext”.
Haaretz pointed out that the “rebels” in Syria refused Lieberman's suggestion to give them humanitarian aid via the International Red Cross. Will the Syrian people turn down the musical revenues too?
