Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, around 129 billion masks are used every month around the world to protect people and these pose a great threat to the environment if the masks are disposed incorrectly, the Environment Authority said.
A statement issued online by the authority said: "At a time when the world's oceans are suffocating with up to 8 million metric tons of plastic leaking into them annually, the pandemic is causing up to 129 billion masks to be used every month around the world for protection. Incorrect disposal poses a great threat to the marine environment and the organisms that live in it."
