Passengers watched in horror as the engine on their packed flight burst into flames moments before take-off in Russia.

Video footage shows flames engulfing the Airbus A321 engine as it sits on the runway at Tolmachevo airport, in the city of Novosibirsk.

Crew on the flight, which had 208 passengers including 27 children, activated the plane's anti-fire system to extinguish the flames as firefighters raced to the scene.

Worried passengers said they heard a 'popping' sound coming from the engine before it burst into flames.

One said: 'It was like a car that doesn't want to start.'

Another said: 'I sat on the right side and saw a flash. There was no panic. But there were also no announcements for about five minutes.'

A third added: 'It was scary seeing the flames.'

The Airbus was from S7, Russia's biggest domestic airline, and had been due to take off for Cam Ranh in Vietnam. 

An S7 spokesman said: 'The crew activated the system for putting out the fire and the plane was returned to terminal.

'Another aircraft was assigned for this flight.

'This plane has been taken for urgent technical service.'

The Airbus involved in the incident has been in service 13 months.
