Xiamen Airlines flight MF8215 had almost completed its boarding sequence.

This is the baffling moment a female airplane passenger unabashedly opened the emergency exit door moments before take-off because she found the cabin 'too stuffy'.

On Monday, Xiamen Airlines flight MF8215 was completing its boarding sequence and poised to hurtle down the runway when crew were alerted to the major safety breach.

The unknown woman's foolishness inflicted misery on fellow passengers as the plane was grounded at Wuhan Tianhe International Airport, central China, for an hour.

Officers then arrested the female passenger before the aircraft was finally allowed to depart for Lanzhou, Gansu.

The uncomfortable woman, reportedly middle-aged, had wrenched down the lever and flung open the door to let some 'fresh air in', despite fliers having been warned not to touch it.

Footage of the carnage which unfolded after the woman's stunt shows cabin crew staring at the door-sized hole in disbelief as they work out what to do.

While a passenger seated near the exit appears to seen the funny side and smiles, another shakes seems irritated and shakes her head.

The clip has been watched over 18million times on social media and has left viewers gobsmacked.

Wuhan airport police have yet to release the passengers name or age, and it is unclear whether she faces an indefinite travel ban for the stunt.

In December 2014, a male passenger on another Xiamen Airlines flight was arrested for a similar offence.
