An outspoken Jordanian Member of Parliament has hit out at “undemocratic” politics after the country’s election yesterday.
Hind Al Fayez, one of Jordan’s most popular MPs, was streamed live on Ammon News telling reporters that she would pull out of the process if parliament decided to re-run elections in her district of Badia. Eight ballot boxes were stolen by unknown “criminals” in the governorate yesterday, then later returned, according to Al Sabeel.
“It doesn’t honor me to join the 18th Parliament as long as these elections are not genuine,” al Fayez said. “There is no democracy in the State of Jordan”
She made the comments after the voting closed in the country’s Parliamentary elections, which have been plagued by voter apathy and frustration. The final tally for turnout yesterday was 37%, a significant drop from previous years.
Commenters expressed support for Al Fayez’s stand, and many agreed with her accusations about the state of politics in the Kingdom.

Al Fayez is one of Jordan’s most well-known and popular political figures. Her notoriety even went global in 2014 when another MP shouted “sit down, Hind” and made sexist remarks toward her. The scandal quickly became a meme, as Jordanians expressed their anger by sharing clips and photos hilariously captioned with the insult.
