Another 5.9 earthquake hits Indonesia’s Flores region

ALBAWABA - Days after the deadly 7.7-magnitude earthquake, a new aftershock hit Indonesia’s Flores region early Monday morning, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ).

According to the GFZ, a 5.9- magnitude earthquake struck the Asian country at a depth of around 10 kilometers.

At this moment, there is no information on damage or casualties.

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake rocked six regencies in eastern Flores Island at 5:58 a.m. local time, forcing Indonesia to declare a 14-day emergency response status.

At least 53 people have been killed in the quake, and the number could increase as rescue operations continue to look for survivors under the rubble, state media said.

The quake affected 6,000 people who were forced to be displaced in the Sikka, Manggara, Nagekeo, Bima and Selayar areas.

Additionally, 914 homes, 93 educational facilities, 36 health facilities and 38 government offices were damaged by the 7.7 quake.
