JFDA and Carrefour Jordan hold their second annual meeting

The Jordanian Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) and Carrefour Hypermarket in Jordan held their second annual meeting last Thursday to discuss several key issues pertaining to food and consumer safety, and to highlight Carrefour’s longstanding accomplishments in this regard.

The meeting was held at Carrefour’s City mall in Amman and was attended by JFDA’s Manager of the Food Administration Directorate Muhammad Khreisha, in addition to several members of Carrefour’s higher management, including General Manager of Sourcing and Marketing (Jordan & Syria) Frederic Ricateau and Quality Manager Rami Muammer.

The meeting came in response to the recommendations issued by His Majesty King Abdullah II urging key players in the local market to reinforce their commitment to consumer protection, and to reduce prices to secure the needs of various consumer segments. During the meeting, new guidelines for food and consumer safety were outlined by the JDFA and an updated operational strategy was formulated by Carrefour to ensure strict adherence to the updated policies.

“This step comes to reinforce the partnership between the JFDA and Carrefour, which is a solid model of public-private partnership,” commented Ricateau. “It is also a key event through which we acknowledge the unwavering efforts of JFDA’s various constituents, including its doctors, engineers and inspectors, who shoulder one of the most vital tasks in our community: the monitoring and regulation of food safety. They are an integral element in the Kingdom’s consumer foods industry and we wish them continued growth and prosperity.”

“Carrefour is one of the Kingdom’s largest and most popular hypermarkets, and has an impeccable track record in the arena of food and consumer safety,” said Dr Khreisha. “Their strict adherence to JFDA guidelines and their commitment to maintaining open communication lines with our administration is a strong model for enlightened leadership.”

Carrefour Jordan is a member of the largest and most dynamic network of hypermarkets around the world, established in Jordan as a joint venture between Majid al Futtaim and Carrefour France. Carrefour Jordan was established in 2006 as the largest shopping center in the kingdom, with 1 hypermarket and 4 supermarkets realizing its concept of offering all what you need under one roof and at the lowest prices. This hypermarket has 40 cash counters and a professional well trained staff totaling more than 450 people; 95% of them are Jordanians.

As the world’s second-largest retailer and the largest in Europe, the group had pioneered the hypermarket concept, offering customers a wide selection of consumer goods at unbeatable prices. The group currently operates five stores in 2 formats: hypermarkets, supermarkets, hard discount and convenience stores, and currently operates more than 15,500 stores, either company-operated or franchises. The group attracts more than 2 billion shoppers worldwide.
