In the coming weeks, millions of Muslims are expected to make their once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to the Saudi city of Mecca.
But disaster struck early when a crane collapsed onto Islam's holiest site, Mecca's Grand Mosque, on Friday. The death toll quickly rose from the initial 55 to 107 with another 238 injured, Reuters reported.
Saudi authorities have been cracking down on safety during Hajj with heightened security measures. Little did they know a sandstorm would hit the region and cause an accident with more casualties than any attack in the kingdom claimed by Daesh (ISIS) so far.
Videos taken by visitors of the incident appear to capture the moment tragedy struck from above. Not much is clear from the footage, but what we can gather is a surreal scene, clouded by hazy air, when a large crash creates panic among the Muslim pilgrims.
