Saudis have responded to the trailer of an upcoming Tom Hanks film which appears to portray the kingdom as backwards and uncivilized. A Hologram For The King follows an American salesman who travels to Saudi Arabia in order to make a business deal with a member of the royal family, and is set to be released this year.

The trailer for the film was posted on YouTube last week, and immediately received severe backlash from Saudis angry that it apparently portrayed their country in a negative light.

Reactions were intense, with some arguing that the film was insulting to Saudis as it ignored modern advancements in the kingdom, choosing to only show the negative aspects - which they claim were exaggerated.

Some complained that the Bedouin man featured in the trailer had no teeth—fitting with a negative stereotype—while others argued that featuring a joke about executions was uncalled for.
