The launching of a campaign to make Lebanese-American porn star Mia Khalifa the US ambassador to Saudi Arabia has raised eyebrows over the weekend. A petition on Change.org calling upon President-elect Donald Trump to appoint Khalifa, has so far gained over 3,000 signatures, and the social media response has been explosive.

The petition, set up by American Dalcolm Rodriguez-Goldstein, argues that Khalifa, best known for a controversial adult video in which she wears a hijab, “has a proven track record of bringing people together regardless of cultural background for the betterment of our country and international community.”

Khalifa, the child of Catholic Lebanese parents, starred in a number of pornographic videos in 2014.

It seems that the petition has gained support from around the world, with one signatory from Bangladesh joking “Make Saudi Arabia Great Again” and a German contributor suggesting that “Saudi Arabia can use some western culture and strong women.”

The Arab world has taken bemusedly to social media to respond to the proposal:

An American website: The porn actor Mia Khalifa to be the American ambassador in Saudi Arabia for the new American administration. Birds of a feather flock together.

Maya Khalifa Ambassador for America in Saudi Arabia - why doesn’t she come to Egypt [instead]?

Mrs. (Maya Khalifa) American Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. To be honest, it’s the right place for her.

Let’s face it, if Trump accepted the petition’s proposal it wouldn’t be his most outlandish policy to date. The Republican has previously suggested, among other wacky ideas, that climate change is a Chinese conspiracy and that Mexico should pay for a 3,200km border wall. We might well hope, then, that Trump focuses his attentions on appointing a porn star ambassador to Saudi Arabia, rather than causing a new world war.
