Activists have called for a two hour Facebook blackout this evening, in protest at what they say is unfair cooperation between the social network and the Israeli government.
The protest follows revelations that Facebook had removed 95% of “terror incitement” and agreed to work with the Israeli government to prevent “extremism” – news that was praised by Israeli outlets for its cooperation, but slammed by others as a potentially dangerous infringement on freedom of speech.
Tweeters used the hashtag #FBCensorsPalestine to promote the boycott, which will take place between 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm GMT this evening.

The outcry comes after several prominent Palestinian media outlets reported having their Facebook pages disabled without warning. In a report by pro-Palestinian outlet Electronic Intifada, administrators of pages for Quds and the Hamas-affiliated Shehab News Agency blamed the agreement between Israel and Facebook for sudden discovery that their accounts had been disabled.
Earlier this week, Facebook users started displaying an upside down Facebook logo in protest at broader reports of censorship on the platform.
