A member of the Consultative Assembly of Saudi Arabia, also known as the Shura Council, has called on the Ministry of Exterior to investigate why so many Saudis were permanently living abroad. Dr Sadqa Fadl claimed that one million Saudis were living abroad, and suggested that this may be an indication that something was wrong within the kingdom.

Fadl argued that it is necessary to study the phenomenon before it worsens, suggesting that it may be a “security risk,” or a “social dilemma.” He stressed that a lack of information on those Saudis living abroad was troubling and thus justified investigation. He took issue with the fact that their was little knowledge of their living conditions, cause of their migration, or their exposure to political, economic or social issues abroad, which meant that the kingdom could not guarantee their safety.

Of those Saudis living abroad, most live in Egypt, the UK, the US, the UAE, Lebanon, and Morocco.

The news of Fadl’s recommendation to the council sparked a hashtag on Twitter, #هجره_مليون_سعودي which translates to “emigration of a million Saudis.” Some Twitter users used the hashtag to voice their reasons for leaving, or wanting to leave, while others expressed their opinions on those who had left.
