It's election time next month in Turkey, and you know what that means. Cat memes!

Yeah, so we didn't know that either, but apparently the Turks are way ahead here.

Let's back up a little.

Turkey's general election is coming up in June, and this ballot run looks like it'll be an intense one — Reuters reported last week that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his ruling AK party may very well lose this position, according to a recent poll. This is the third time the country's heading into an election in a little more than a year, and analysts are saying these results will carry historic importance for a country a lot to figure out internally and locked into an increasingly rocky situation among its neighbors.

Obviously, the Turks have got a lot on their plate. Luckily they're well-versed in finding the right cat for every occassion.

Muftah collected this running list of cat memes posted by Turks across Twitter, and they are awesome.

Behold “Recep Tayyip Erdocat." (Twitter)

As Muftah explains, each cat's look is a reflection of the party's stereotype. Like this one, dubbed "Revolutionary Cat," who Twitter users say could represent the Kurdish leftist party, People's Democratic Party, which historically runs platforms advocating for minority rights and anti-discrimination laws. Here she is running through tear gas a la Tahrir.

Meanwhile, Erdogan's Justice and Development Party is a pious cat in a headscarf. Initialed AKP in Turkish, the party is made up of Turkey's religious, middle-class Muslims.

Next up, we have the leftist Republican People's Party, who Muftah tells us is known best for a feircely secular ideology, and a voracious appetite for Raki, a Turkish liquor. That's why this RPP cat is passed out.

Finally, we have Turkey's Nationalist Movement Party that, like its same pretty clearly suggests, is a conservative movement with fierce Turkish nationalism and a religious platform. Here, this NMP kitty plays with Muslim prayer beads, sips on tea and looks a little grumpy.
