Ashkenazi says Israel ready to act against Hizbullah even in populated areas

Israel's Army Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi was quoted as saying on Tuesday that the Israeli military is prepared for action against Lebanon's Hizbullah, even in populated areas, if necessary, adding however that the situation was "calm at the moment." Ashkenazi said in a statement to Israeli radio from Rome, conveyed: "Hizbullah is building its presence in the populated areas of southern Lebanon, where UNIFIL forces can not discover weapons and if necessary we will act in these areas."

"The situation is calm at the moment but we are following developments and are ready for all the developments," he stressed.

The Israeli military intelligence has accused Hizbullah of storing some 40,000 rockets in southern Lebanon towns in since the 2006 war.

The World Tribune newspaper reported on Monday that Hizbulla deployed more than 5,000 fighters on Lebanon's border with Israel, noting that the Israeli army located evidence to the heavy presence of Hizbullah in Shiite villages on the border.
