A new chapter was written Wednesday in the history of Tunisia after a local court ordered the former ruling RCD party to be dissolved. The Rally for Constitutional Democracy (RCD) had already been suspended from official duties in February after President Ben Ali fled on January 14 amid a popular uprising to topple his regime.

According to AFP, the court "has decided to dissolve the Rally for Constitutional Democracy and to liquidate its assets and funds," the ruling said.

Once the Court announced its decision to disband the party, sounds of joy were heard at the court room.

The dissolution of the former ruling party came just two days after the abolition of the powerful state security apparatus, which during the era of Ben Ali for suppressed the Tunisians. This decision was also greatly welcomed by the people.
